Gave my first real pitch today

A mentor of mine hooked me up to speak with an exec at an independent Hollywood studio with some major cache about my project Reparations Check today. In the blog I talk about the experience and what I learned. Watch the clip and subscribe to be kept up to date with all things Reparations Check the movie. If you haven't already seen it, subscribing also gets you access to my short Breakfast with Ana.

Vlog I: The Script’s Done!

So I had to re-write Reparations the Movie to make it a more do-able budget. It even got a new title Reparations Check. In the original there were some 22 locations and 30 speaking parts. It's still a little heavy but I'm hoping wittled down to 4-locations and 15 speaking parts that I can get it done. Check out this the first vlog by yours truly to learn more. If you're not signed up for the newsletter now's the time so you don't miss out on behind the scenes info and opportunities to be in the film.

My experience on Breakfast with Ana short film

By Ana Jurado Once up, I was ready to put my best energy and performance so the film could come out good. My experience in working with Rod Veal in his short movie Breakfast with Ana. It was fun and exciting because I had never done any kind of acting in front of a camera. It was hard waking up early on a weekend to shoot the movie because it was Saturday morning and I would of preferred to sleep in haha. Yes the the title had breakfast so director Rod was very serious about shooting in the morning. Once up, I was ready to put my best energy and performance so the film could come out good. My...

Opening Image

OPENING IMAGE If you've ever read the late Blake Snyder's Save the Cat book on screenwriting then you know about beat sheets. And if you know about beat sheets then you know about the opening image. If you don't, beat sheets are sheets broken into 15 parts that work like an outline for a movie. The late great Blake figured out that almost all of the best movies shared a common structure to the story. The first beat is the "opening image". Hopefully we're all on the same page now. If not, keep returning to learn about beats and assorted other things I learned on my continuing journey towards...

How ‘Breakfast with Ana’ Came to be

How ‘Breakfast with Ana’ Came to be

"Breakfast with Ana" is a love letter to my boo Ana Jurado. In our two-year-old relationship, she has been an oasis of "good girl" in a desert of "bad bitches". She's cut from a different cloth and she doesn't mind spoiling me sometimes. And this is my ode to her. It's my way of saying "I see you boo. And I see you're heart." The short is also practice as I prepare for making my first feature film; Reparations Check. It's essentially a bit of film exercise. The challenge was to tell a story without any dialogue. So I ruminated on that idea for a couple months as I worked on post-production for "The...

I had my first radio interview about the film

Shot out to Laura Marin (@lauramfilmmaker on Instagram) who invited me on her KLBC radio show Long Beach Life to talk about my film and living in Long Beach. I had a blast and had my first live test of saying my pitch on air. I'll just say it wasn't a complete disaster. We were on the Long Beach City College radio stations air waves and streaming through something called Twitch.tvIt was a blast talking with C Boo and Shannon Trisler, the Sustainability Queen of LBCC who were also guests on the show. Laura was kind enough to let me talk about my short film "Breakfast with Ana" which is premiering...

How big is 40 acres?

I found this meme quite educational. There's little wonder why the government would renege on such a deal.   .@HillaryClinton @SenSanders want the Black vote? Lets talk USA debt to Black people - #REPARATIONS. #JusticeParty pic.twitter.com/afiLcLf42B — ZIMBABWE KID (@zimbabwekid) March 15, 2016

Making of the Lucid Perceptive Dream

Justin Johnson aka The Raw Writer and I met on our street in Long Beach, California. He recited some poetry for me one day and it was clear that he was very talented. Despite being humble and almost dismissive of his gift he was consistently writing. As a screenplay writer I admired this about him. He invited me to check out his poetry on AllPoetry.com. I enjoyed his work but was stopped in my tracks when I read The Lucid Perceptive Dream. I loved that it was a short story. I could see the images in my head that went along with it So I invited him to work together to create a short movie based...
