Rod Veal is a photojournalist, filmmaker and videographer with 20 years making storytelling images and making images tell compelling stories. He started in 1996 fresh from the University of Illinois and the Daily Illini newspaper and the News Gazette. He also minored in video production. He returned to Chicago in 1997 after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. As luck would have it he immediately began freelancing for the historical black newspaper the Chicago Defender. There he shot luminaries, news, concerts and most notably the Chicago Bulls in both of their last two championship seasons of 1996 and 1997. Since then, he went on to move to Orange County, CA. and began freelancing for the Orange County Register eventually being hired on as a staff photographer. During this time the internet, shook up the media landscape and Rod used this seismic shift as an opportunity to learn to shoot and edit video on a professional level. His passion for video production led to the creation of several short films including “Breakfast with Ana” and “The Lucid Perceptive Dream” that can be seen here on rodveal.com. Currently, he is producing his first feature film “Reparations Check”.
